The Things That Drive Us â How the Next Generation of IT Professionals Defines Contemporary Career Success
Modern career concepts revolutionize our understanding of a successful career. Employees nowadays define career success in many diverse ways, based on a variety of personal goals. To attract the next generation of IT professionals and to improve gender balance in IT, organizations must understand future IT professionalsâ perceptions of a successful career. By analyzing 127 personal career success definitions from IT students in Germany, we present a broad spectrum of desired career success factors in IT. We illustrate the concept of career success dualism, which describes career success as a balance between multiple factors, such as remuneration and work-life balance. Furthermore, we present how female IT students have a stronger drive toward subjective career success factors than males. Our study contributes to a better understanding of current IT students and suggests how organizations can hire and retain the next generation of IT professionals
The Hidden Potential: Explaining How and Why Late-Entry IT Professionals Move Into The IT Profession
To sustain the rapid technological evolution, more than our internal market of young IT talent will be required to satisfy the need for IT staff. Integrating skilled non-IT professionals in the IT sector may help combat the IT skills shortage. However, we still lack an understanding of how and why non-IT professionals enter the IT sector late in their careers. We address this research gap by drawing on the careers of 53 successful late-entry IT professionals. By combining the theories of boundaryless and protean careers with the signaling theory, we discuss how we see shifts in the signals of knowledge, skills, and abilities that lower the barriers of the IT profession and explain how signals of behavior and practices act as door openers into IT. Lastly, we introduce four career patterns of late-entry IT professionals and thus shape our understanding of contemporary career development in but also outside of IT
Leaks in the IT Workforce Pipeline: Investigating IT Students and Their Plans to Leave or Stay in the IT Profession
To remain competitive in the fast-paced information technology (IT) industry, companies will have to rely heavily on the next generation of IT professionals. Yet we know little about future IT professionalsâ career plans: Are contemporary career attitudes tempting IT students to leave the IT profession? And can early professional identification prevent potential exit plans? Based on a survey with 180 IT students, we investigate how their turnaway intention from IT is shaped by their boundaryless career attitudes (BCAs), namely the desire for interdisciplinary work and the desire for inter-organizational mobility, and how professional identification influences this relationship. We find divergent effects of the two BCA forms on turnaway intention. In addition, we find a reducing effect of professional identification on turnaway intention, but also surprising interaction effects with BCAs. Our findings indicate that IT students with different BCAs follow distinct career paths across organizations and professions. Our study contributes to research on IT careers and provides guidance for organizations on how to employ future, boundaryless IT professionals
Agile and Attached: The Impact of Agile Practices on Agile Team Membersâ Affective Organisational Commitment
The current shortage of information systems (IS) specialists is leading to a strongly competitive labour market for the IT workforce. Technology companies need opportunities to prevent high replacement costs and knowledge loss by strengthening the affective organisational commitment (affective OC) of their employees. Using structural equation modelling, we investigate the influence of agile information systems development (ISD) on team membersâ affective OC. Our results demonstrate that agile project management (APM)positively predicts affective OC directly as well as indirectly via team membersâ job autonomy (JA) and their supervisorsâ support (SS). Our study gives empirical evidence on the relationship between agile ISD practices and affective OC and provides implications how to successfully leverage team membersâ affective OC. For practitioners, our research expounds why and how agile ISD is a suitable instrument to transform leadership culture within the company so as to raise affective OC beyond the IT workforce
The Role of Work Engagement in Agile Software Development: Investigating Job Demands and Job Resources
Agile software development projects still show a high failure rate. Despite a growing amount of research, underlying reasons for project performance currently remain rare. Drawing on the job demands-resources theory, we propose a theoretical model of work engagement in agile software development teams. Using structural equation modeling, we found that agile practices diminish job demands (perceived workload and role ambiguity) and support job resources (perceived meaningfulness and job autonomy). Job resources have been found to be positively related to work engagement in agile software development teams. Our research contributes to the limited empirical understanding on work engagement in agile software development. For practitioners, our model provides tools to effectively manage team membersâ work engagement
EXPLORING THE POTENTIALS OF PATIENT-GENERATED HEALTH DATA FOR THE TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION
Patient-generated health data (PGHD) enables healthcare professionals to get deeper insights into patients with depression, thus offering the opportunity to improve their treatment. However, due to the variety and methods for collecting PGHD, not all types are relevant for healthcare professionals in depression care. To identify relevant types of PGHD for the treatment of depression, we conducted a qualitative focus group study with 13 healthcare professionals and follow-up interviews. The study\u27s key findings include relevant identified PGHD concerning their collection effort. In addition, the results show a clear preference for PGHD that both have strong connections to depressive symptoms and use passive collection methods, such as sleep data and activity levels. With this article, we contribute to the usage of PGHD in clinical settings and thus create a better understanding of relevant types of PGHD for the treatment of depression
Generation Z Entering IT â Navigating Expectations for Employers and Employees
Recruiting Generation Z IT professionals (born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s) presents unique challenges for organizations in the fast-paced digital era. This paper employs a cluster analysis approach to gain insights into Generation Z IT professionalsâ employer and workplace expectations, enabling organizations to develop targeted strategies for effective digital talent attraction and employment. Analyzing the expectations of 370 current IT students, we highlight three distinct clusters within the sample: Success-Driven Prestige Seekers, Challenge-Driven Autonomy Seekers, and Money-Driven Security Seekers. We show how each cluster prefers different employer and workplace characteristics and illustrate paths for organizations to tailor their recruitment strategies for each cluster. This paper contributes valuable insights into the preferences and motivations of Generation Z IT professionals and provides practical recommendations for organizations seeking to build a talented, digital workforce by integrating Generation Z IT professionals
